The LANCELOT Project

LANguage Learning With CErtified Live Online Teachers

On June 15, 2005 the European Commission granted approval for the development project LANCELOT in the framework of LEONARDO DA VINCI, Language Competence II. A total of 23 partners in 8 European countries participated in a 2-year development project starting September 2005.

Two years later, in September 2007, the project was successfully completed and the outcomes have been presented at the EUROCALL conference in Irleand. This homepage has been set up to provide a summary of the project results on a single website.

Project Outcomes

In LANCELOT, the specifications for the praxis of live online language teaching will be explored, determined and developed within the project. These specifications will be implemented in form of guides/ manuals in a hard copy (pdf downloadable) and in form of an online copy as well as a training concept for the training of live online language teachers. Project outcomes are as follows:

(Transcript of the recording) Gary Motteram: These two years on producing a set of materials that are enabling people to learn how to teach what is termed in this project 'live online'. In a sense it is an extension of other kind of online learning activities that have been going on for a long time and obviously people have experimented with these kind of tools in the past then increasingly with the development of broadband and other kind of technologies. Its beginning to become easy to do this kind of thing, it certainly has become easier as you get the hang of it, you begin to sort of take the risk of doing this kind of live session at a conference like this.

There are a number of people who are part of this presentation and who are in the audience ... so there are a number of people who are in the audience that will introduce themselves as we get along. This is part of a larger project, the people on the first slide here represent a larger group of people who come from a number of organisations and like in all European project we have a leaflet here if anybody is interested and we have got a URL in the end that is actually the URL at the bottom of the screen as well, so that if people want to visit the site and learn about the project they can do. ..more...

(Transcript of the recording) Christian Swertz: Thank you very much again for your interest in our project LANCELOT. Let me introduce myself, I am Professor for Media-Education at the University of Vienna and I had the honor to coordinate this project.

In my talk I will discuss the usage of educational data as meta data live online teaching and learning and how we used the meta data vocabulary called webdidactics in our project. Well in my talk I will consider four aspects ....

  • at first I will discuss heterogeneity as a problem for live online
  • secondly I will discuss the idea of using establish teaching and learning methods context for synchronous online language learning environment,
  • then I will introduce the general structure of the LANCELOT program
  • and finally I will demonstrate how we use educational meta data to cover the heterogeneity and to cover the individual strands in the LANCELOT project.

So in the first section I will expose heterogeneity as a major problem for online teaching and learning and we distinguished three types of heterogeneity. The first type heterogeneity is the heterogeneity of media. We find that heterogeneity with people in science, at this point algorithms have to be considered as media that is every communication tool and every featured software that you are using for online communication has to be regarded as a statistic media and thus as there are lots of online communication tools available we had to consider a wide range of media. ...more...

First of all I would like to start with the need for that strand in this LANCELOT project, the need for the ICC, shortly we use ICC as a term, it stands for Intercultural Communicative Competence, I am going to explain why we use this term in a minute, so, the need for the ICC strand in the project is, firstly we can say the latest tendency in language teaching it is called the intercultural approach and this is a further development of the communicative approach and it is since the mid 1980ies, there is a tendency to talk about the all linguistic and intercultural aspect in language teaching and take into account the intercultural aspect, not cultural, so, that's why it was import and secondly people of different cultures are meeting in the online environment together....more...

(Transcript of the recording) Gary Motteram: ..to bring up and to say just a few brief words, not to kind of re-iterate what people have been saying, but basically we have had presentations to do with issues to do with the 'Technology strand' and we called them strands, the 'Intercultural strand' and then what we called the 'Teacher training strand' or the 'Methodology strand'.

So, as well as having input about particular aspects of technology, particular issues in intercultural studies, we also got information in there about methodology.

One of the things we had to consider with the methodology, as I said, the people involved in this course were fundamentally people who were involved already language teachers themselves. So we did not want to start to trying to get them to learn things that they already knew, so we took topics and got them to explore it bearing in mind issues they might find in the live online environment. ... more....

  1. an evaluation of the project
  2. and evaluation of the LANCELOT course

For the purpose of evaluating the project a SWOT analysis was conducted by all of the project partners during the Interim Meeting in Manchester.

For the purpose of evaluating the course, they interviewed language trainers and analysed feedback provided by participants of both Action Research (October 2006 - December 2006) and the Pilot Test (March 2007-May 2007).

These reports provided valuable input to increase effectiveness and better communication in the project team and to help improve the final outcomes, the LANCELOT course.

Evaluation of the Project

Internal evaluation report – Lancelot project, November 2006

It is the aim of this report to assess and evaluate the internal communication and management of the Lancelot project during the first year of the project’s life (October 2005- October 2006). The report focuses on these issues through the perspective of a SWOT analysis carried out by the project members at the interim meeting in Manchester October 6-8. The SWOT analysis was chosen for its ability to identify problem areas within an organisation or group as well as focusing on and facilitating future actions and strategies. The report contains a summary of the issues raised by the SWOT as well as a suggestion for future actions.

Evaluation of the LANCELOT course

Analysis of qualitative interviews with online language teachers, June 2006

At the kick-off meeting in Vienna October 2005 it was agreed that partners would conduct a limited number of interviews to make an initial survey of issues that would be relevant for the production of the manual & guide. It was therefore the objective of the interviews to produce knowledge about the basis for live online language teaching, i.e

  • investigate traditional classroom pedagogy of language learning in virtual classroom environment
  • outline particularities of learning processes in live online language teaching
  • outline  advantages and disadvantages of  live online language teaching
  • describe technological skills specifically required for live online language teaching
  • define need for qualification of the live online language teacher

The Danish team conducted 4 semi-structured interviews with teachers. The interviews were made on the basis of an interview guide discussed by all partners in December 2005. To access the report, click on the link in the title or click here.

Analysis of qualitative interviews with Action Research Trainees, February 2007

Interviews with trainees were conducted after the Action Research period (November-December 2006), when LBs 1-4 were tested on trainees.

The aim of the interviews was to understand how teachers learn to teach and to relate to the online environment through the specific context of the Lancelot live online course.  The focus of the interviews was on the one hand the ability of the course to support this learning process and on the other hand the correction and adjustment of the syllabus for the spring pilot testing phase (beginning March 2007). LANCELOT pilot report, June 2007

The aim of the Lancelot pilot evaluation process was to understand how teachers learn to teach and to relate to the online environment through the specific context of the Lancelot live online course.

Following the Action Research in the autumn of 2006 the LANCELOT live online language course was revised for the piloting in the spring of 2007.
